Southwest Florida Girls Wrestling: See which lifters qualified for state
The FHSAA Girls Weightlifting Finals are Saturday in Lakeland. Southwest Florida boasts several programs on the come-up, with athletes qualifying for a chance at a state championship.
Fort Myers leads the way for the area, having qualified for 19 events after dominating district and regional tournaments, while LaBelle travels to the RP Funding Center with 10 opportunities at a state title.
Mariner girls, Fort Myers, Naples, Canterbury boys trying to win state titles
The Tritons, down multiple players to injury, got past North Fort Myers 3-0 Tuesday night to clinch a spot in the Final Four for the second consecutive year. They’ll take on Tallahassee Lincoln on the road on Friday night for a spot in the Class 5A State Championship game.
Should Mariner win, the Tritons would be the first Southwest Florida girls soccer team to make it to back-to-back state championship games.
H.S. girls basketball: Hawthorne claims 1A region title, P.K. Yonge advances in 3A bracket
In Class 1A, Hawthorne rolled past Newberry for the second straight matchup, 80-55 to clinch a region title and a state semifinal berth. Hornet sophomore De’Mya Adams was sensational, scoring 41 points. Hawthorne improves to 13-5, while Newberry’s season ends at 22-6.
Elsewhere, Trenton fell to Wildwood for the third time this season in another 1A regional final, 61-36. The Tigers wrap up the season 18-12.
